- How to appeal to sustainable consumers in the Beauty and Personal Care Industry
11h00 – 11h20 : Why it is time for the beauty and cosmetics industry to refresh its approach to waste and overproduction
- AVERY DENISON - Maryna Grytsenko-Nénon, Market Development Europe
Avery Dennison's report "The Missing Billions: The Real Cost of Supply Chain Waste" reveals that more than 10% of beauty products worth an estimated $4.8 billion are wasted in supply chains. 6.2% of goods thrown away are the result of overproduction while 4% of inventory is thrown away due to spoilage or deterioration of the merchandise. Unsurprisingly, this is a growing concern for brands, which could be losing up to 2.8% of their annual profits.
Using RFID technology is a solution that helps brands reduce supply chain waste. It creates a unique digital identity for each product and connects the physical with the digital. It provides valuable information that enables consumers to make better decisions, including transparency and carbon footprint.

We produce 100% natural and compostable packaging material, it is flexible, very protective, beautiful in design and leaves no dust! Perfect for substituting single use plastic packaging such as bubble wrap and way smaller footprint from other eco alternatives such as paper and carton.
We have developed an innovative new process and products where we skip all of the resourceful steps of paper/carton production. Therefore compared to paper we need:
- 10 times less wood (we can turn 1 m3 of wood into 20 m3 of packaging!)
- 3000 times less water
- 50 times less energy
0 chemicals (compared to up to 200 chemicals used in paper production)

11h20 – 11h40 : Decarbonizing the industry with Climate Oils
- COLIPI - Max Webers, CEO
For climate protection, we valorize CO2 to oils, through gas-fermentation. We use CO2, O2 and H2. We use bacteria. We use yeasts. We use a proprietary gas-fermentation reactor design. We at COLIPI develop unique and CO2-neutral bioprocesses for the production of various oils based on renewable raw materials, thus offering sustainable yet economic alternatives to vegetable oils such as palm oil for the cosmetic and food industry.
11H40 – 12H00 : Turning biowaste into biodegradables polymers for cosmetics formulation
- DIONYMER - Thomas Hennebel, CEO & Cofounder
Dionymer is developing a biomimetic technology that upgrades any organic waste (food waste, grape pomace…) into biodegradable polymers with customizable properties. These are called PolyHydroxyAlkanoates (PHA). We synthetize our circular polymers through an unique bacterial fermentation process.
Theses polymers are inherently bio-based, biodegradable, biocompatible and compostable. They have mechanical, thermal and physico-chemical properties similar to petrol-based polymers and can be used advantageously for the formulation of cosmetics and personal care products. Since it is biodegradable like any other polymer, PHAs do not accumulate in the environment. What is more, it is a bio-compatible and naturally bioabsorbable material coming into contact with the skin, lips, hair and mucous membranes. There is an opportunity to fossil-free and fully biodegradable cosmetic formulations, let’s go for it.
Thursday 19th - Session 4 : Bio based ingredients to replace petro chemistry

The challenge of the Ocean Approved® Label, through its three pillars "Pollution, acidification and global change of the marine environment", "Exploitation of maritime and coastal resources" and "Cross-cutting issues of the MDG 14", is to guide companies in playing a major and increasingly active role in safeguarding the blue planet, by giving them the keys to :
- Understand and measure their direct and indirect impacts on the Ocean
- Set objectives and identify concrete actions to protect the Ocean
- Commit to a continuous improvement process (biodiversity, waste, GHGs, etc.)
14h20 – 15h00 : Advancing sustainable cosmetics through innovation, valorization opportunities and Cooperation
- (RE)SET - Frank Gana, CEO and co-founder
The cosmetic industry uses a large number of "pre-competitive" base products (moisturizers, preservatives, surfactants, etc.), most of which are petroleum-based or polluting. Most actions related to cosmetic ingredients are still currently underdeveloped and often limited to seeking more "natural" and "organic" ingredients, without necessarily proving their environmental gains. Therefore, it is necessary to act by defining possible alternatives, identifying opportunities (i.e. use of coproducts, …) and launching collective action with professionals in the cosmetic industry.
15h00 – 15h20 : CLEAN INGREDIENT TECH – assessing full product portfolio for global compliance to avoid wasteful reformulation and more easily integrate cleaner ingredients
- THE GOOD FACE PROJECT - Lucas Nanini, GM Europe & Asia Operations
Replacing ingredients on a full portfolio can be very complicated, and often impossible. This is all the more true when a big regulation comes in and shakes everything up. Through large scale automation and molecular modeling, good face is able to more quickly integrate regulatory change on its database to support brands willing to develop new and globally compliant products. But also, reinforced by molecular AI, the creation of molecular digital twins help predict the safety and environmental risks for NEW ingredients, even before extensive literature starts being created.
