Changes in the skin appearance with age (wrinkles, dullness, age spots, among others) are the consequences of earlier changes in biological processes occurring at the molecular and cellular level. Thus, a better understanding of the molecular events underlying skin aging will pave the road for the development of rational & efficient dermo-cosmetics treatments. In this session we will review the key molecular mechanisms implicated in skin damage and reparation. Of special interest is the regulation of protein homeostasis, since proteins take part in essentially every structure and activity of the skin and are the most ubiquitously affected macromolecules upon stress and aging. In the second part, state-of-the art experimental proteomics approaches will be presented to underline the benefits to be gained from increased protection against oxidative modification of proteins and/or the stimulation of their elimination.
